The Honorary Officer Association was initiated in 1986 and formally named in 1990 with the mission to provide professional voluntary support to the North West Parks & Tourism Board through the management and education of tourists and the active conservation of biodiversity in the North West Parks.

HO DUTIES

  • VISITOR MANAGEMENT

Visitor Management is performed in three of the North West Parks: Pilanesberg, Borakalalo and Kgaswane Mountain Reserve. During Visitor Management, HOs patrol the reserve, monitor specific game, resolve any problems and assist visitors with general queries and directions.

  • VERY IMPORTANT SPECIES MONITORING (VIS)

HO’s perform VIS duties to aid and assist NWP & TB in monitoring specific species such as rhino, wild dogs, brown hyena and sable that are under threat or ecological pressure.

  • COUNTER POACHING UNIT (CPU)

Counter Poaching Unit (CPU) section of the HO Association provides additional manpower to the NWP & TB to assist their initiative to counter poaching in the North West Parks. To become a member of the CPU requires specialist firearms and bush knowledge training.
